SCHOOL HOLIDAYS OUT OF THE BLUE

Impetus for writing the present brief is derived from an article published in Daily Dawn on Saturday April 5 2008 titled School holidays out of the blue.
Much to the parents and teachers plight these unplanned and sudden holiday announcements not only serve to increase the work load of teachers who are inundated to complete the course on time but also compromises the learning of students who in the end will have to wreck their brains to make up for the lost work. So celebration over a pleasant surprise of an extra holiday turns into an un-called -for labor.
Unfortunately holidays on birthdays and death anniversaries of National leaders, saints and religious occasions are only observed as staying home for rest and recreation without understanding the spirit.
What is required is a mindful approach on part of government ,school authorities and parents to make children aware of the significance of such occasions, generating discussion surrounding the event and how it impacts the public life, religious obligations as well as national interest.

True. Earlier when school holidays were announced to celebrate a particular day, children were told about the importance of the day & the reason why it was being celebrated or the contributions of the person who was being honored. There was always some activity planned & conducted at the school. The students & teachers all participated. It ended at the latest before noon.
These days were informal lessons in history and were always made fun for the students. In this way children became rooted in their culture & history.

You are right, now a days these holidays have no meaning.
